Academic Advisors
Advising Philosophy
Advising is working closely with students, getting to know them individually, listening to their personal needs, and being part of their academic journey. I am here to work as a team member with students to navigate UNM’s system, find the best major for them, and reach their full potential.

Advising Philosophy
Advisors are teachers – they teach students how to navigate successfully through the university system. Advisors are navigators – they give guidance that enhances students’ educational journey and personal development. Advisors are translators – they articulate for the student the language of higher education.

Knowledge is power. Education has made an immensely positive impact on my life. I’d love to meet with you to talk about how it can and will change your life for the better. I am passionate about helping Biology students to explore career options and reach their personal goals. My advising interests include guiding LGBTQIA-identifying students and advocating for International Students and Women in STEM.

Advising Philosophy
I have a student centered advising philosophy. I want to be your ally at UNM! I use a number of different advising strategies when working with students including intrusive advising, developmental advising, and prescriptive advising. I enjoy working with students one-on-one and in group advising sessions here at UNM. I believe advising is a chance to ask questions, think critically about school and life goals, connect students to resources, and share opportunities. I’m a lifelong learner, and I’m always learning from my students.

I aim on implementing a learning as advising approach as well as a proactive approach for my students. I understand that transition is a big part of life, and that everyone is going through one at any given time, so I will be purposeful and structured with students, connecting with them prior to problems developing in their academics.

Advising Philosophy
I believe the purpose of advising is to effectively guide students through the degree of their choice by establishing trusting, professional, academic, and advising/mentoring relationships. An advisor should also help students by promoting the development of analytical and synthetical skills to leverage and utilize resources, and prepare students for future graduate programs or career by implementing academic, professional, and personal goal-accomplishing strategies.

Advising Philosophy
I believe advising is about collaboration. Through grown trust, effective guidance and knowledgeable communication, each student who walks through my door will know I am on their team. The partnership between student and advisor is pivotal to making the UNM experience worthwhile for students. I strive to enhance that experience through each session as an advisor. Working toward graduation can be difficult at times, which is why I don’t take the responsibility of supporting students lightly.

Advising Philosophy
I practice a holistic, student-centered, learning-centered, interdisciplinary, social justice approach to advising. I am genuinely interested in the success of all my students, including prospective students and alumni. I see "success" defined differently for each student and that definition can change as life is experienced and knowledge is gained.
