Advising Philosophy

My advising approaches are situated within my own lived experience as a first-generation college student. Navigating university systems, discovering fields of interests, creating professional networks, and exploring career options are no easy tasks to do alone. My role as an academic advisor is to be a supportive mentor and partner throughout any student’s journey. All students have all the tools necessary to succeed. I believe in creating a student-centered, advising-as-partnership approach in which both the advisor and advisee practice a rhetoric of respect. There is no one right way to move through the world. The role of the academic advisor is to facilitate collaboration and community through curious, unjudging, and inclusive approaches that advocate for students holistically. My role as an advisor is to provide any advisee with fundamental mentorship that supports them beyond their academic journey.

Advising Philosophy

Attending college is a time when students discover new interests and career paths they may not have previously thought about. Whether a student is an incoming freshman or a senior nearing graduation, it helps to have a place to discuss career goals, plan next steps, and voice any concerns. Academic advising is more than just telling students about degree program requirements; it’s also about encouraging them take full advantage of all that academic life has to offer. As an advisor, my aim is to help students navigate the University of New Mexico with confidence and develop an academic plan that fits their interests and post-graduation plans. Each student each has their own unique academic and professional goals. It is therefore the responsibility of an advisor to serve as a guide who listens to helping each student by providing encouragement, recognizing progress made, and connecting them to appropriate campus resources. Most importantly, I want Lobos to know that earning a degree is a journey they don’t have to navigate alone!

Advising Philosophy

Advisors should bring an open, respectful, and positive attitude to listen to what goals a student would like to accomplish. I do not believe that I can tell someone what they should want out of life, but I am extremely motivated to help them navigate their journey to get there. An advisor should encourage students to have a growth mindset and believe in their own potential. Though some roads may be longer than others, I believe that all students are “college material” if they commit to accomplishing that goal.

Advising Philosophy

An advisor’s task is to facilitate a successful outcome for students in accordance with the students’ wants, needs, and degree requirements. I am aware of the role I can play as an advisor in helping a student feel confident and in control of their lives against the backdrop of a complicated and always-shifting university system with a potentially overwhelming variety of options to pursue. I aim to make my advisement sessions a safe place for students to identify what they need and to ask questions. It is immensely powerful to know what questions to ask, and I want that empowerment for all students. I also aim to support them in tracking down information and resources when asking questions alone doesn’t cut it!

My approach to advising centers compassion, solidarity, and a commitment to supporting all students including (but not limited to) students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, unhoused students, and women. There are social realities that an advisor must take into account to adequately serve their population of advisees; recognizing these social realities and the way they manifest themselves in students’ lives is an important part of making the university a safe, comfortable place for everyone to learn and grow joyfully.

I believe advising is about collaboration. Through grown trust, effective guidance and knowledgeable communication, each student who walks through my door will know I am on their team. The partnership between student and advisor is pivotal to making the UNM experience worthwhile for students. I strive to enhance that experience through each session as an advisor. Working toward graduation can be difficult at times, which is why I don’t take the responsibility of supporting students lightly.

Pre-Law and Law School Admissions Advisor

When it comes to law school admissions and Pre-Law advisement, I want to help all Lobos make their dreams of being admitted and graduating from a law school come true. Whether you are a branch student in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos and Valencia or a main campus undergraduate or graduate student, I want to help you on your path to applying to law school. I know how special UNM graduates are when it comes to law school recruitment, and I want to help maximize that with scholarship offers. This can, hopefully, lead to more UNM graduates graduating from law schools around the country as close to zero debt as they can.

My main goal as an academic advisor is to help students tackle the institutional barriers that exist within higher education. College can be overwhelming for some students, especially for those who are the first in their family to attend. As a first generation student myself, I know firsthand how daunting it can be. Between registering for classes, figuring out financial aid, studying for final exams, etc., it is extremely easy to become dissuaded. This is why I will make it my duty to alleviate any stress I can by providing the utmost attention to any and all students who meet with me.

Because college is a unique experience for each student, every individual comes with a different set of needs depending on their particular set of circumstances. It is my job to recognize these differences for each student and to also develop a plan for them based on those specific needs. I will do my best to find both on campus and off campus resources for students, ensuring that if I’m not able to help with something, somebody else will.  All in all, I long to provide a safe space for students to come and seek help. Whether it be an academic concern or a logistics issue, I hope students are able to find solace through my advising techniques and strategies.

My job as an academic advisor is to help students navigate university systems and overcome institutional barriers so that students can accomplish their academic and career goals. College can be an intimidating and isolating experience, and many students find themselves thinking it is nearly impossible for them to be successful within higher education.  It is my responsibility to support and encourage students with open-communication, transparency, respect, and empathy. I believe in a student-centered advisement approach where students should feel safe and welcome to come as they are and express their thoughts, concerns, and needs. Advisors should handle student interactions with care and do everything in their power to foster student success. I am dedicated to working with students through the ups and downs of university life and supporting them with compassion as they work towards completing their degrees.

Advising Philosophy

Academic advising serves as the compass guiding students through the maze that can be higher education. While Advising, it is my job to foster a partnership between advisors and students, taking into account their individual strengths and challenges. It’s about recognizing that each student is a unique constellation of dreams, talents, and ambitions, and guiding them along the path of their personal and professional goals. Effective academic advising is key to a student’s academic growth and success as well as fostering their own autonomy. It provides students with the resources and guidance needed to overcome obstacles and stay on track toward graduation. When students feel seen, heard, and supported, they are more likely to thrive academically, emotionally, and personally. I believe these kinds of student-centered advisement approaches are crucial in meting these goals with students.

Advising Philosophy

As an academic advisor, I am here to guide students through their college journey.  I believe advising goes beyond picking classes and meeting degree requirements.  Advisors are mentors and advocates.  Through honest, empathetic conversations, I develop lasting relationships with students.  Through this relationship I hope to provide students with tools to grow their confidence, independence, and self-advocacy.  By the time they reach their ultimate goal of graduation, students will leave prepared not only for their career ahead, but for life outside of college.  I am a supporting cast member of a student’s story, cheering at their successes and helping them pick themselves up when they stumble.  College can be a stressful time, but with support it can also be an exciting time of growth.  I have experience both as a UNM student and as a teacher, which gives me unique insight into challenges student faces.

My goal as an advisor is to support all students with the hope that they can have an optimal college experience, leading them to graduate with a sense of accomplishment and pride. As a first-gen student myself, I have seen the types of barriers that exist for students unfamiliar with the world of higher education. I hope to do my best to help students learn from these obstacles, and gain skills that can be utilized in the future. I believe that making mistakes is natural to the process of learning, and being able to ask questions or ask for help are essential skills that should be encouraged. The role of an advisor is to develop those skills, and provide guidance that will help navigate through the pathway to a degree. Additionally, I know that each person at UNM has a unique perspective and background, and I strive to approach each interaction as a learning experience for myself.

Advising Philosophy

As an academic advisor it is my goal to assist students as they navigate the often-difficult world of higher Ed. I believe in a holistic advising approach and understanding each student as a whole person and not just only a student. With each student interaction I will commit to the following: 1) Develop Autonomy. The best way one can assist someone is to help them understand the way things work and how to work them, this way they will be able to look out for themselves when the time comes. Students must understand and truly feel that they are the one in charge of their futures. Empowering students with information and methods on how to make informed decisions makes all the difference. 2) Maintain Knowledge / Encourage Involvement. As an advisor, I will be engaged with the university’s resources, policies, procedure, and various offices. I will also stay aware of current events and changes that happen within their client population. It is important to not only care about students, but to show that you care. I strive to encourage students to be engaged and involved with campus life. It is also my goal to make information accessible to students and be able to provide them with opportunities that I may come across.  3) Develop Purpose. Asking students questions that interrogate why they want to do what they are doing is something I believe will help them develop a stronger sense of purpose. I want students to have a sincere interest in what they are doing and find their place in the university and the world at large.
